PLEASE JOIN US FOR THIS EXCITING SATURDAY MORNING AUCTION! REGARDS, ELSIE & DAN Judith Grace grew up in England during the Great Depression and came of age during World War II. She married an American intelligence officer named Herman Schmidt and moved to the U.S. after the war. Judith raised two children of her own and cared for several foster children. She traveled extensively both during and after her marriage, throughout North, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East as well as visiting East Africa, India and China. She filled her home with antiques from England and the Mid East and quality mementos from all over the world. She went back to school in her 50s, getting a PhD in Ethnobotany and using her skill with a camera to share her learning with the public. She studied plant uses by Woodland Indians of the Northeast and gathered an extensive collection of baskets and birch bark containers from Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, Micmac, Ojibwe and Iroquois artisans. In her 70s Judith bought 450 acres in rural Maine and built a house, barn, guest cottage and caretaker's house -- all "off-the-grid," powered by solar energy. She was a passionate conservationist and advocate for alternative energy and sustainability. For ten years she organized the Central Maine Solar Tour, of which her house was a highlight. Judith Schmidt was a tireless learner and educator. She loved animals and young people, served local environmental causes, worked for social justice, collected clothes for the homeless and for a Lakota Sioux reservation, and ministered to inmates at the local prison. She touched lives wherever she lived, and all over the world. |
